Yamametan is an experimental film set in Hiba, a mountainous region in Hiroshima, Japan, where the goddess Izanami is said to have been buried according to the Kojiki, Japan’s oldest surviving chronicle.
The film moves between a working quarry, local brass-band music, heavy machinery, mythology, and hand-drawn animation. Stones cut from the mountain are transported outward and become roads, buildings, and urban infrastructure elsewhere. At the same time, the mountain remains a place where myth, labor, memory, and extraction overlap.
Rather than treating quarrying simply as destruction, Yamametan looks at the uneven relationship between rural landscapes and the cities that depend on their resources. By bringing documentary images into contact with myth and fiction, the film asks how a landscape can hold both loss and livelihood, and how distant urban life is materially connected to a mountain being continuously reshaped.
