左右の耳に、一本のオーディオケーブルで繋がった二つの貝殻をあてがう。右の貝殻には指向性マイク、左の貝殻にはスピーカーを内蔵している。
耳に一定の音を取り込むと、蝸牛の振動が外へと漏れ出す。この微細な音は「耳音響放射」と呼ばれる。
作品では、右耳から発せられる耳音響放射と周囲の環境音が貝殻の内側で反射し、それをマイクが拾い上げ、左耳のスピーカーを通して聴くことができる仕組みをつくった。
幼い頃、山奥に暮らしていた私は、ほとんど海を見たことがなかった。それでも貝殻に耳を当てると聴こえる“波の音”に強く魅了された記憶がある。
この作品における貝殻は、海の記憶を呼び起こすと同時に、自分の内奥に潜む海の存在を聴覚を通して確かめる装置でもある。

When the ear takes in a certain amount of sound into the cochlea, the vibrations of the cochlea leak out. This is called otoacoustic emission (OAE).
As a child living deep in the mountains, I was fascinated by the sounds of the sea coming from shells.
The viewer may feel nostalgic for the sound of the ocean when he or she holds a shell to his or her ear, but may also feel the presence of the ocean within himself or herself at the same time.
