This video work was developed through research conducted during an artist-in-residence program on Awaji Island, a place closely associated with Japan’s kuniumi, or “birth of the land,” mythology.
Awaji Island is also home to the Nojima Fault, which has been preserved as a visible trace of the 1995 Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake. While visiting islands connected to myth and the fault exposed by the earthquake, I began to sense a form of time different from the linear time perceived within a single human life: time accumulated in overlapping strata, like geological layers.
Past events do not simply recede into the distance. They remain on the surface of the land, within memory, and in bodily perception. The present moment, too, is part of this ongoing sedimentation.
Nami ni Utsushite layers the island’s mythology, the memory of the earthquake, and geological movement through the rhythm of waves and the temporality of moving images. The work attempts to perceive the present as something formed upon multiple, uneven layers of time.
